Typical HPFP failure.... mild to medium acceleration on the highway.
If it is an 08' your warranty is 120k miles and 10 years on the part. May want to get them to check the injectors and LPFP too while it's in the shop.

congratulations on joining a infamous club
Strike 1 you will need 2 more in a year to get a buyback or lemon law..

At one point I was thinking about the 535 since you can do all those cool, cheap highpower upgrades, but my 550 is holding up well and is fast enough to get me in trouble if I let it.

I hope you work out things with your fuel pump.

Someone's car experiencing the symptoms described in the OP at the wrong time (turning into traffic etc) could have severe consequences. It isn't enough to simply extend the warranty as BMW seems to have done - these things need to be recalled and replaced with a more robust design. The chances are that at some point soon we will see a serious incident attributed to the HPFP - a known design flaw that BMW has chosen to essentially sweep under the carpet. That didn't turn out too well for Toyota, and it won't turn out well for BMW.
+1, I agree, so why isnt BMW doing more to address this.. Dont they realize the reprocussions if this happens in the wrong place/wrong time scenario?

I think realoem lists the fuel pump itself @ ~$481. there's a newer gen fuel pump which I think tischer sells for $329. But the labor/time in order to get the fuel pump is the PITA AFAIK. Aside from the pump, an SW upgrade is recc'd, which at minimum an overnight stay in the service bay....

I've had a pump replaced in 4-6 hours with a software update (went threw 5 and 2 lp's , so it's kinda old hat). The Software update does not have to be done, but is recommended by BMW.
