You have to be kidding me here...you "Googlers" are missing the bigger picture...

(and that's just from putting "MPM" in the Google box at the top of each page...)

And one more bit of advice...

If you have to keep replacing fuses, you should stop after the second one blows and figure out WTF is causing them to blow in the first place...

Ja, that was very very funny (but then again, so was my ,,after the smoke clears`` line and no one seems to have gotten it )
I got it but I'm thinking that the smoke hadn't cleared for many. Plus, you have to admit that the "on fire with a hole in it" line kind of trumped you...)

Talking

Its funny because I never checked back to see what happend in this post because i had fixed the problem. Heres the story:
We went to a concert and i had a cooler in my trunk, and apparently we forgot to take it out and it spilled. I thought i cleaned up the mess but there was about 2 inches of dirty water in my wheel well. To top it off, in the first generation 2004 530s the Idrive electrics were in the wheel well in the trunk, with no drain. So every time i started the car it would short circuit until finally it smoked and caught fire. Eventually i found this and realized it wasnt my idrive video mod but the MPM which controls when the idrive turns on and off. So for all 2004 5 series owners, DONT SPILL THINGS IN YOUR TRUNK. If you do, dont worry its about 200 bucks for the MPM and really easy to install, but that was a scary day for my car.

I modded my nav screen and everything stopped working. To my knowledge my electrics were fine so i kept replacing fuses when my screen would shut off. Then i replaced a fuse today and i noticed smoke comming from my spare tire. I pulled everything out frantically t o find my my "MPM" on fire...Literally.. It has a huge hole in it. What do i do now? I have no idrive system but the car starts perfectly. BTW my trunk had about 2 inches of water in it probably from a spilled cooler. I am out of warranty with 51000 miles . Any advice would be great.

I guess you have a big problem considering your "electrics" are fine and at the same time you kept on replacing fuses .....

First let me guess.... when the fuses kept on breaking off you went on with a smart idea and replaced one of them with a bigger fuse (higher AMPs).... please tell me you did that!!!!

then after you did that... this strage thing happenned..... smoke started being noticed from the trunk

HAHA....I replaced them with the same fused i took out and kept finding different ones blowing. Finally the nav screen said "Electrical System Failure...PLEASE TURN OFF THE CAR!!" hahaha. Then the smoke came out.

Seriously, If BMW is going to stash electrical components in the base of the trunk, they should be in a waterproof area. There are many ways that owners are getting water in the base of the trunk, its not unusual to do this and to have electrical components in this area, in my opinion is bad design. Spilled coolers, a bad trunk seal when washing the car, driving in high water situations, there are many ways to get a flood in the trunk area. A 10 dollar plastic waterproof box where the electronics are placed or situate the electrical components on the side of the trunk walls would allieviate this problem. For a car known for good design this is a bad one.
