over 45,000 miles mine 530D auto averages 32.4 mpg, (total miles/total fuel).

Remap might get you 1 mpg more but that's all.

You can't have everything, there is a price to pay for all that power on tap.

Work out how much you would save by getting 4 mpg more, over an average mileage it's peanuts, even with our stupid fuel prices at ?5 ($10) per gallon

I was getting disappointed with only getting 38.7mpgUK out of my remapped 535d.. All motorway at high speed.

A reminder to those posting here that US gallons are not the same as imperial gallons.

Not happy with 30+ on the highway? Go figure. I was seriously considering a new Benz c-class but the demo they gave me only got 23-25 on the highway. I was used to 30+ in a BMW, so I went from a 328 to a 545. The guys on the Benz forum were very, very upset that I would even consider mileage in a luxury car. The mileage wasn't the only issue, but it took that car off the table in a hurry.

Also, my 545i gets a little better at highways speeds than the 528 loaner I had (30 vs 28). The 528 loaner was better in the city though (22 vs 18). I'm planning to joining a waterski club next summer that is 75 miles from my house, so the highway is what I was looking for. My boat sucks gas like crazy. To drive the boat to the ski spot and ski for an hour takes 8-10 gallons, plus gas in the car to get to the boat. I'm better off driving to the private lake.

One compelling car on my radar for when my wife's lease is up next year is the new Benz e350 (maybe e320?) diesel. They say 27/37. I like BMWs, but if a competitor pushes 40 on the highway, I'll really consider that.

That does make me feel a little better, and at least nothing is wrong with the motor.

On the subject of remaps, any advice on the best place to go and do it really make a difference. (not sure if this should be a new post, sorry).

Thankyou all for your feedback so far.

My E61 530i does

24.8 USmpg/29.7 UKmpg in cities, (9.5 l/100km)
28.3 USmpg/34.0 UKmpg on country roads. (8.3 l/100km)

Pretty decent for a 1800kg petrol car, albeit with the new direct injection that is supposed to deliver some 31 USmpg/37UKmpg according to specifcations... Oh well.
