Hey guys I read on the e61 discussion that everyone in the UK gets roughly 22-25 MPG 40-45 on a good run on the autobahn. Just wondering what is the averages for people in the states. I get 17 combined high way and city driving but if i go all highway probably 23 or so. but my mpg always says 20 but when i do the cals. per fill up i get 17. just wondering! report in on how accurate BMW is with there MPG

The accuracy of the computer stated MPG can be adjusted to reflect real life MPG. Search is your friend.
That says you can set your MPG where ever you want it but the miles logged are then not accurate. I prefer accurate distance to accurate fuel consumption info.
As many have said, the only accurate measure is by dividing the true distance by the pump volume.

There is a procedure to adjust MPG. However, I believe it merely tweaks the elapsed miles.

My Ride: 2006 Titanium Silver 550i, with all the bells and whistles!!
I find these dicussions interesting. To me, a car is an expense, I made a deposit, I have monthly payments, I have insurance payments, I buy tires and brakes as needed, etc....
Gas in the tank, just another consumable. I drive and I fill as needed, frankly I don't care what mileage I get. I am driving what I want, when I want and how I want, and that is what is important to me. It is after all "The Ultimate Driving Experience". If I wanted fuel economy I would have bought a Honda Accord!
Don't misunderstand, it is good to know that 360hp will get me 16.5mpg on average (14.3L/100km) as a daily driver and little to no highway time. I had the cruise control set at 75mph (120km/hr) on the way to my sons hockey game and was averaging 39mpg (6L/100km) for that highway trip.

I will have to disagree. My miles logged as well as the manual check (dividing odometer miles by pump volume) are extremely close. In fact, I blame the small (and inconsistent) discrepancy on errors in the pump volume. I mostly drive around town with some LA freeway driving and my MPG (both computer and manual check) comes out to be around 24.0MPG with an average speed of 29.2 MPH. I am a "light-footed" driver most of the time.
I believe the gas pump volume because in our state the pump accuracy is monitored by a government agency. (I won?t argue the accuracy of any government function, however).
Your MPG could be right on the hack, but how do you know the ODO is accurate? I check mine frequently with a hand held GPS.
The adjustment mentioned will adjust the MPG by tweaking the setting. It doesn?t make any difference whether the dividend or the divisor is changed, the result (MPG) is adjusted to your liking.
The only disagreement here might be the pump volume issue which I agree could be a valid argument.
And you know, while I read all posts dealing with fuel efficiency I don?t see much value in the MPGs I see posted. Many are downright comical.
How many E60 models are there (Displacements, fuel type, drive train, etc.)? How many use US Gallons, Euro Gallons or Liters? How many different daily or occasional routes do we drive? And how many different driving styles do we have amongst the E60ers who post? And how many of us tend to, ahh, stretch the truth? There are probably more combinations of those factors than we have members.
It does make interesting reading, and good conversation.

My Ride: E61 sold nice E91 335i Sport Touring now
I'm getting a consistent 40mpg (UK) from my remapped 525d sport touring. Thats without trying. I managed 46mpg from it on the 1st tank I used but that was over a long distance drive bringing it 'home' from the dealer 600 miles away!
I think if I really tried I'd do better but if I can get 40mpg from it I'll be happy.
I'm finding the I-drive MPG calculation to be 10% out and have seen a DIY guide for the push button start engines that lets you alter this. Anyone seen a guide for a regular key model? I've tried using the guide but just get German info on the display? I have it set to UK gallons.
