It's 4.54l to 3.78l, so it's pretty close to 1.2 times bigger. So you have to divide UK mpg by 1.2 to get US equiv.
In my 2004 530 I average about 24-25mpg which a even mix of city and more rural roads near highway speeds. But since getting my progman update about a week ago it's been more like 21-22 so I'm hoping it was a glitch on the end of the tank.

my '04 525 gets about 24 to 25 mpg average city/highway.
But speed and driving habits make a big difference.
On highway alone I've managed to get 35MPG averaging about 65-70mph, Averaging about 60 mph i can get slightly better, but averaging 80mph it goes down to ~29 MPG. These are all over 150-250 mile stretches and according to the i-drive.
I was very surprised an how efficienct the car was on fuel....but then again, I've got the smallest engine they make in the US for a 5-series.

Forget "average".
My -actual- is more than 25mpg US. I have never reset the computer since I bought my 2006 530i N52 manual. My average speed is ~33mph. That should give you an idea of my driving mix. Mostly highway, but a good amount of traffic and around-town.
I kept a spreadsheet for the first 2 years of ownership. I fluctuated from 22+ to 28+ on an entire tank of gas (not skewed for highway trips).
I also tracked tire pressures. The max pressure vs. lighter load pressures was pretty surprising. I think it was about a 2mpg loss in economy by lowering my tire pressure.

18.23mpg (US). or 12.9L/100km for the last 5,000km. I drive fairly hard, and I'm happy with my consumption.
My friends 2006 330i does 10.7L/100km or 21.98mpg (US) and he is just as crazy as me.

'04 545i here. Avg 15-16 mixed driving, 22-24 highway only. Maybe if I drove like all these buick lesabre "snow birds" from Quebec I would have better mpg, but then I wouldn't enjoy my V8 and I would probably get rear-ended by somebody going 5 miles UNDER the speed limit!
Welcome to South Florida in the winter

I get 21-22 in the city and usually 32-33 on the highway although over the summer I managed to get 37-38 on the highway once.
