OK I was mistaken I Know why I keep thinking March 2005.. thats when they switched over from Business Radio to Professional Radio. All 2006+ non Nav cars got Prof radio as opposed to business radio prior. (* I dont think this has anything to do with MP3 capability *) I'm just posting to clarify why I had 03/05 stuck in my head.

My Ride: Dec 2006 530d M Sport. Titanium silver. 172 wheels, black leather, black wood & various other small bits.
I've got a late 06 car, single CD & no NAV. I recently got the latest software update as I fitted a CD changer. I still can't read MP3's in the head unit. Just ordered a Dension.

Actually, I think you are on to something. Based on what I've read, only Professional Radios are capable of MP3 Playback. Since all NAV cars have professional Radios, that explains why some older NAV cars can be retrofited for MP3 while cars with Buisines radios (without NAV) cant. After a certain point (around 4/05) all cars (with and without NAV) got proffessional radios and consequently, the ability to play MP3s. At least that is my theory...
Theory is somewhat right.
Hope my thread adds to this:
