M-ASK stands for Multi-Audio System Controller. Controller is spelled with a "K" in German.

Apparently only October (Week 40) and newer vehicles with Pro Nav/CCC can play MP3.

It will allow playback of CD's with MP3 files.

The E90 has this feature as well as the new E60 that are leaving the factory now, but the hardware is a little different. All E60's that are older (MY03-05) are waiting for the needed update.

Based on this post by Iceman, I have a very simple question.
I am about to order a new E60 in the UK (expected deliver Jan06). It has no nav at all, and I'm only getting the standard Business Radio.
Will it be able to play MP3?
Or do I still need to upgrade to Professional Radio?

Please advise. I probably still have time to change my order if neccessary.

Yes, you need Professional Radio for MP3

Thanks for that reply. So l'll upgrade to Prof radio.
It just feels out of order that the E90 comes with Pro Radio as standard, whilst it's a cost option on an E60!!
I'm quite sure that BMW will have to make this standard in the next model year to bring things in line.

I believe all E60s built after March 2005... have Prof Radio... so you dont need NAV anymore.. from NOW on... ANY E60 built after Oct 2005 will have MP3 capability...

I am now confused and probably have now joined the many of you in this confused world of MP3 and BMW
In Europe, Prof Radio is still a cost option. You only get Bus Radio as standard.
Now, I know that going forward all new E60 with Prof radio will be MP3 compatible. But what I'm not sure is what about the standard Bus Radio - MP3 compatible after Oct 2005 or not??
E60Speed view is that Prof Radio will still be needed.
But from the chart that cobradav posted earlier, it would appear that actually Bus Radio will be MP3 compatible from Sept/Oct 2005. My interpretation of it is that Bus Radio runs on the M-ASK.
May be my understanding is wrong.

No I think you are correct. Bus Radio Do run on M-ASK... Prof Radio is still an option in Europe? I had the impression that as of March 2005 even Europe got Prof Radio... didnt people report here that those w/out Pro NAV in Europe were able to play MP3s?

BUT there was one post that someone said that their dealer told them even Bus Radio will be able to play MP3s with the new software release in Dec 2005. Not sure...

BUT whats for sure is if you have Prof Radio then you will be able to play MP3s

Bus Radio is still unclear it seems.

Afraid we still get Bus Radio as standard (when you don't order any sort of Nav)- well at least in the UK.

I will call BMW UK tomorrow and try to speak to somebody who knows. Will keep you guys posted.

I'm curious on how BMW will sort out the fact that customers having paid more for their E60 setup (Pro Nav) end with "less" than customers with Bus Nav (no MP3).

Of course, this is a problem (is it?) if the theory that CCC unit on cars built until 2005/09 can't cope with rendering the maps AND decoding MP3 files at the same time.

Of course my hopes are low
