Iif your car has navigation of any type (business or pro nav) then you'd have an on-dash dvd drive where you'll normally insert the navigation dvd-rom. If you car has the ability to play mp3 files then the on-dash drive without a doubt play them - but the cd changer will never play mp3 files!
With regards to burning software, if you have mp3 files already on your computer then you can just use any basic burner to create a "Data" DVD/CD and play that in your e60. You don't have to create any specific "mp3" CD/DVD. However, if your original tracks are in other format than mp3 then you'll require a program of some sort to convert those track to mp3 and then create the data CD/DVD.
If all fails, then what vadim said is your only option i.e. SW update to turn on mp3 playback.
Hope this helps!

If the car's software has been updated and the disc is burned properly, you should be able to play .MP3 discs in either the single-CD slot or the DVD (navigation map disc) slot.
First, take a look at the following service bulletin (updated 7/2009) on the subject:
SI_B_65_30_05_MP3_CD_Playback_Not_Available_7_2009.pdf
From there, if you think your car can play the discs, create one using the directions in the following thread (read beyond the first post):
https://5series.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=24018
From there, you can read all sorts of older threads on the subject...keep in mind that some of these threads are older and may not be entirely accurate:

(there are more out there but I think you get the idea...
