I received my July issue of Motor Trend magazine today. They ran a comparison of the four cars mentioned. The 550i finished third behind the Jaguar and the Merc. The 550i had the best 0-60 time, 4.8 seconds and the best quarter mile time, 13.3 seconds @ 105.1.
However the write up was not very kind. Some of the quotes are: "As soon as the asphalt cracks up, the ride shifts into hammer time-way too stiff for comfortable motoring, even if you're in attack mode." "In addition to its intolerable ride over patchy pavement, the 550i disappoints with fatigue-inducing front seats, a still frustrating and unintuitive iDrive, a dark and cold cockpit and a monster engine that somehow doesn't feel that monsterlike out on the road." "Throw in a price tag that approaches 70 large, and the BMW is deemed best left in the cellar."

The best part of the article, in my opinion, were the performance numbers. I saw the 550i had a 4.8 second time in the 0-60, which made me proud. I've always thought it faster than the 5.2 I see posted so many other places.
Keep in mind that the XF is a 2009 model and the 2008 550i is a refresh from a 2004/2006 model. Let's wait until the F10 comes out

Motor Trend is good when I run out of toilet paper.
Regarding to their comments:
1) Stiff suspension: 19 inches with run-flat will always stiff. I use 18 inches with higher profile non-runflat works great.
2) Comfort seat: dude there are 2 memory settings per each key, one should set for city driving position another should set for long fwy driving position. Use it dumb-asses and stop complaining!! You can't sleep all eight hours without changing position on your bed! how could you do it on a driver seat! This is completely non-sense stupid comment!!
3) idrive frustration: again, it is not a car for farmers, sorry. You need to have at lease one game console and completed all missions in GTA
, idrive is not designed for cavemen. If it ain't good, why others copy it? another dumbest comment!

I LOVE THIS CHAIR! Get the gel padding and the headrest is a must.

Anyway, the problem in my search for the holy grail of ergonomic chairs is the headrest and the upper back portion are not adjustable. I'm 6 ft. tall, which you could say is average, but I have a long back. My pants length is 30, so it's hard for me to find a chair that will support my height and neck.
That's why I looooooooove the comfort seats in the E60. The upper tilt adjustment is a godsend for my neck.

I'd like to do the opposite...put my desk chair in my M5. I have 2 and they are both much better than my comfort seats. I have been playing with these seats for over a month and cannot get them right. And they are hard as a rock!
There's way too much mid to upper back support with little lumbar. I feel as if I have a fist in my back at all times. I guess I'll keep playing around with them.

I just cannot get rid of the feeling that there is a bar running across my mid back below the shoulder blades. No matter how I adjust the seats my shoulders to my neck are uncomfortable. I managed to deflate the lumbar all the way and push it down so that is not the problem ... it seems my back is just not compatible with the upper back support.
I'm hoping to get used to them, but I have to say that the comfort seats are a disappointment. I drove a non-sport 535xi for three weeks prior to getting my car, and the (standard) seats were perfectly comfortable.

With respect to the comfort seats, you have to play with adjusting them for a bit. It took me a while to get mine just right.
Plus, more Idrive bashing? Once you learn how it all works it's simple. Maybe they forget to read the manual?

r.e. rough ride. I think the testers are confused. BMW's are supposed to communicate road feel to the driver. My non-enthusiast parents rode in my car and loved the ride ... and I have SP. As a driver, I do feel every road irregularity via the steering ... but that's the way it's supposed to be. The comfort seats are the best ever made. If they are uncomfortable, they aren't adjusted right or you're not used to sitting in a correct posture. I-drive does suck. However, the buttons and features added in the LCI make it more tolerable. I didn't buy a BMW for the interior. Although IMHO it is better than the Jag and Merc interior. I bought it for the engine, chassis, performance, and the manual transmission.

However the spin doctors at these mags try to make it not so, the e60 and here specifically, the 550i, remains the standard by which all others are judged in the class. Frankly, it's a bit lonely at the top, but at least we have each other on the forum. These writers like to pretend and say there are close choices to be made, but secretly I think that they would all fight to see who gets first choice to jump into the 550i and zoom off into the sunset.
