more reliable OR easier to work on; e60 or e39?

in your opinion, which is easier to work on and repair yourself, or which just runs into less problems overall?
trying to avoid big stuff that isn't preventable like transmission meltdowns even if you replace the fluid and valves falling into engines ect ect

Hands down e39. Way less tech and complexity to deal with. Now that is not saying they don't have issues but they will definitely be more reliable. We have had one in my family for the last 12 years.

E39 is going to be easier and more reliable working on electrical components, sensors, computer, etc.
Mechanicals are about the same from brake, engine, suspensions, bearings, bushings, etc

E60 is more reliable ( not talking about crappy ZF transmissions )
E39 is much easy to work
if you can find good E39 go for it but most of them are bitten to death already
so the final choice is always the car condition
