I intend taking along a 3.5mm cable and the usb cable to try this out when i pick the car up - I am not expecting it to work though as the cable splits the usb output from the iPod into usb and 3.5mm - taking a direct feed from the phone socket doesn't appear to be supported (will work for straight forward playback as we see now with the AUX-in but without iDrive file structure).

Just so no one is confused, although I indicate the Aux-in port in the back of the center console is gone, I also indicate that it has moved INTO the console.

Also no mention in your article about the EXISTING AUX IN (in the REAR of the centre console) being deleted or superseded by the addition of this new option.
Being "recognised authorities", unfortunately doesn't make them necessarily right. It happens quite often when experts are summarising published information is a dissertation rather than delivering first-hand knowledge in a thesis.
BTW
While the USB option doesn?t conflict with the CD changer, it?s unclear why anyone would want a changer nowadays

This isn't terribly complicated. For the 5er, the existing aux-in jack has been moved into the console (my article of course is not specific to a specific range of BMW btw).
The USB port is next to the existing aux-in, whether it's been moved or not (again, depends on range).
