I know JSpira and others have already very kindly provided some of this info already, but the attached BMW document gives more detail on how the USB socket works. My dealer got it for me in response to a question. Enjoy.

PS Can't wait for my 523i LCI to arrive in Week 15!

So it looks like you can charge USB devices or power a USB cup warmer from the USB socket.

Thanks for this.

Some contentious statements in the pdf...

"USB hard disks and USB hubs and storage card
readers with several slots cannot be used with the
USB audio interface. The use of USB memory sticks
with integrated hard disk is not recommended.
Tests have shown that no sufficient audio quality
can be ensured for this.
and it also looks like we dont get the iPOD Y cable

Apple iPods are connected to the vehicle via the
cable adapter for Apple iPods available in the
accessories of the BMW Group.

I cannot quite get my hands on it now but I posted a document earlier in March which quite clearly indicated that the cable would be supplied with the option.

Once you have a reply from your dealer please can you let us know. I don't want to pick up my car and then find I have to chase around to get the cable. I hope that my document is correct and that the posted here is misleading. If it isn't then it would be disappointing. You pay ?205 for a USB interface (which should be free on a car like this) and then you have to pay extra to get the cable.

I suspect cable will be supplied as standard in some markets - such as the US, but not in others such as Uk and Ireland. I plan to use an 8Gb USB stick which should keep me occupied for a while.

According to my dealer it is not a BMW part - it is an Apple item (obviously this is for iPod) I can't see anything on the apple.co.uk store that looks similar to this - would someone who has an order in contact their dealer and see if they get the same response (UK that is) ?

I wonder if seperate 3.5mm jack connector and standard USB cables would work?

So why is the photo in the PDF plastered with BMW logo, "Munchen" and a part number?
