Same thing here, no problem at all!
I leave the trunk lock in the default setting, resulting in the trunk getting locked automatically when driving away (when all of my doors get locked automatically).
If someone needs to be in the trunk then I just unlock all of my doors (with the button on the dashboard) and that person can open the trunk by using the handle. If I need to be in the trunk myself then I have to get out of the car and I will switch off the engine and take my key out, this way I can open my trunk while approaching it. So as I already said, no big deal at all to me.
I also think that this behavior is by design since it was also present on my past 3 other BMW's. One additional note though, if you really want an unlock button why not use the second remote key that was supplied with your car? Store it somewhere inside your car and if you really want to open the trunk just press the button on the second remote.

Very convenient indeed if you lose the main key then

Or you could just brake one of the windows and get the second key (the one to open your trunk) out.
