Howdy fellow SMG'ers...

Lately I've noticed a small, intermittent problem when performing SMG downshifts. Not every time but once in a while, right as I downshift, the radio will go silent for a split second. Also, sometimes other things will flash too like the HUD display (and maybe the MID display).

It all happens so fast it's sometimes hard to notice everything but for now, clearly I've seen the HUD and radio issue. I'm still playing around trying to determine how to duplicate the problem reliably but since it doesn't happen every time I downshift, I can't get enough data to precisely troubleshoot things.

The first few times it happened, I was listening to Sirius and I thought I simply drove through a "dead spot" but then I realized it was happening on AM, etc. Once I saw the HUD flash and I connected the incident to the downshift, I realized that it was more than just radio reception.

Anyone else notice this? I'll be getting a CIP update soon so maybe this will all go away by itself...
same here, just noticed it about 2-3 wks ago, never had it before.Radio(fm or cd or whatever is on) goes silent for split second either at downshifting or upshifting,in manual or auto mode.Does not happen all the time,so it took me a while to figure out that it is connected to SMG,and it definately is! I find it strange since i did not have my car serviced or CIP upgraded or anything like that...strange

Not seeing it on mine, Rudy. But then again I *do not* have the seat and steering wheel warmer function. I also live in California and my car is always garaged. It has never really experienced a "cold" start....
Good Luck.

So far, the people that have reported seeing this issue all live in colder climates -- maybe there's something to the extra load of the seat/steering wheel heaters?

I have the seat/steering wheel heater but they don't need to be on for me to have the problem. I have a radar detector that has a volt meter mode and every time it happens its because the volts shoot up beyond 15.6 volts with a SMG shift.

I would think a good working voltage reg would not let that happen (15.6). May be a protective measure on the dash system to prevent any led/bulb burnouts. Sounds like the making of a software change. You guys better get this reported, especially of you can get it to happen in cold with the warmers on so SAs or techs can see it.

This morning it was quite cold (-12C) and I turned all possible heaters on. The problem was not there...
I just e-mailed a friend of mine, who owns a 2004 e60 Diesel with HUD in Germany and he has the same problem. Maybe its HUD related?

drjochen, thanks for the information. Is your friend's car an SMG?

Also, the problem on my car is random and quite intermittent at this point so there's no telling if your test this morning is anything we can bank on...

Can't say I have noticed it, but will keep my eye out for it. Thanks for the heads up though.

Its a 6 speed manual.
Mine is intermitted, too, thats why my dealer will say:"Cannot reproduce" and will do nothing...
