Trying to find and correct rattles in my car is Rocket Science.
I keep returning the car to the dealer for the same noises they have fixed. I have now a similar intermittent metallic rattle which sounds like knocking pipes together. It may occur on closing a front door or over rough pavement. Sometimes it seems to be from under a seat, then from the transmission housing area.It may rattle ften one day then a week - nothing. Believe me it refuses to occur when taken on a test drive.
This car is my 5th European, but frist BMW.
Don't worry about noises or rattles, worry when the car does not start

For me, it sounds like dinner plates rattling. It is coming from the sunroof. it's very obvious but goes away every time i go in for service (go figure).

I have been turning up the music to drown it out. When it's happening, closing doors, driving over minor bumps, almost any disturbance will make it rattle, except during the visit to the dealer.
very frustrating.

It is the sun roof. Slide back the blind and while driving over a bumpy road press up against the front underside of the sunroof the instant you hear the knocking. I did this and it confirmed this as the source.
Mind you this is not a recommended fix, but produces a feeling of satisfaction of knowing you can instruct the service technician where to fix and hear no more guess estimates.
