There are either six or eight - depending on European or U.S. version.
I have the 2 on the steering wheel - also for Mute and Next Entertainment source. Is the OP referring to something other than these 2 buttons? (I do not have Nav, if this matters)

I am referring to the buttons by the CD/DVD player. There are 5 or 6 of them that can be individually programmed.

In the LCI (Life Cycle Impulse, e.g. "facelift") model there are "favourite" buttons on the centre console. In the UK we have 8, and they can be assigned to perform any function. In the US, because they have fatter fingers, and aren't clever enough to remember 8 things, they only get 6 buttons.

I set them up so my wife could make calls easily, Home, me, our daughter, another cell#, a Nav. destination, and WB. Problem is i didn't realize that they were programed to my key and not hers. After telling her about the handy and wonderful things I've learned and done, all she gets are some random 87.7fm presets It's even worse when I push the wrong button and mistakenly call myself while I'm driving.

I'll get this right yet. But it's way cool just the same.

We get one for each finger.

I have one set to Nav to home, and the other to a favorite FM station. I use voice for the phone numbers, since I don't have that many different ones. I just wish I could say 'phone home' instead of 'call home'......

Russ, I thought I had read this before (and actually seen a pic where they were in the side of the console), but I just took delivery of my 2008 LCI 535i yesterday and there are no buttons on the console?? I can't imagine I'd be missing them? I do have the couple on the steering wheel and the 1-6 buttons under the CD slot (center stack area)...but nothing else...I actually mentioned being excited about the updated I-drive functionality along with the six programmable buttons to my SA last night. He only knew about the few on the steering wheel....are the "radio preset buttons" now programable for more than just radio stations...confused

Those 6 buttons under the CD slot are the ones being referred to throughout this thread. You get 6 in the US, and we get 8 in Europe. These buttons may be programmed to perform radio, CD, navigation and phone related activities, so it's a little misleading of you SA to refer to them as "radio preset buttons" - they can do a lot more than that.

Mac - thanks for clarifying!! That's the conclusion I had come to as well. I guess my SA hadn't heard those cold be programed for things other than just radio presets!
