So after finally driving in dry road conditions I have encountered a problem. Say for example if I'm in 2nd gear cruising say at 3000 rpm. If I hammer on my gas it will rev for about 750 rpm and then go...I have a 2004 545i 6spd. So basically I'm just wondering if any of you have encountered this. I plan to take it to my mechanic on Monday by it's bothering me so just trying to get it out.

It sounds like your clutch is toast. Sorry to say. How many miles are on it? Do you often do hard launches?

+1 It gets worse the more aggressive you drive, you now have to be very smooth, roll unto the gas easy and stop hammering it. In the end though you will need the clutch done.....remember, it's also a huge safety issue, you can no longer power your way out of trouble.!(...turns in front of oncoming traffic etc.)

+1, You probably need a new clutch, throw out bearing and associated parts. Your not quick enough on and off the clutch pedal, if you do a lot of city driving and you ride the clutch, you are bound to need a new one.

No I don't launch it very often at all. I picked it up in september of 08 and it has 80000kms now. So really? It's my clutch? That's what I was thinking but I couldn't understand how because my foot wouldn't be on my clutch at all

Simple test really, put the handbrake on select 1st gear and bring up the clutch and check the bite On a good clutch it should be quite snappy and have the back of the car bouncing up and down. With a bad clutch there will be no bite untill the clutch is almost fully disengaged.

No need to touch the accelerator during the test.

Ok so I did the test and it seems to grab just fine...the back of the car bounces just like you said. So just so I was clear this is what happens. If I'm driving normal in 2nd or 3rd gear. My rpms are at 3000 and then I put the gas to the floor with my foot completely off the clutch of course. It's will rev and still move and then the rpms go back down a little and Then it starts to really move as it normally should.
