Alpina B5 is a better competitor to the two other cars, not the M5. Different kind of animals...

The main reason the M5 did so poorly was the SMGIII transmission which they felt was great for the track, but not so good for all around driving.

This is becuase the toolbags who did the test don't know how to drive an SMG.

I'm sure if a knowledgable person would give them a 5 minute driving lesson, they'd love it.

You know, I don't always agree with them; but I like their approach of "no boring cars." There is more editorializing/ essays in there, but they're interesting. The photography is beautiful, and I like Cumberford's (or whatever his name is) design analyses pointing out all the aspects he likes and dislikes. The writing itself is always very good, which is NOT true of the trite, fluffy articles in the mainstream Car and Driver/ Motor Trend magazines.

I was dissappointed that more attention in the comparison wasn't made to driving dynamics. This is where BMW shines, and is why most of us buy this brand. I also agree that there is a learning curve for SMG after which it becomes almost second nature. The automatic part of SMGII is aweful, but still helpful if trying to eat in the car. The SMGII took me about 2 months to master and become second nature. This is the same issue as i-drive; it takes a while to get used to because there is a learning curve. But after that it is kind of neat to not have so many knobs cluttering the dash.

And as far as the Mercedes being more aggressive looking and on the edge I would have to disagree. I think the Mercedes is ugly. The Audi is better looking than the Mercedes. But as far as style that has influenced the automotive industry the e60 is the leader. I hated it at first but love it now.
