In the UK we have factory OEM M-Sport models, which is great. They have basically the same panels as what you get with the 'M-Tech kit' in the US.
The only 'M' inscriptions they put on, are on the wheels, the steering wheel, and the door sills. Just hints of what the car is aspiring to, and in my opinion, that is enough. 'M' badges on the trunk etc, is just too much.

My Ride: Stock 2004 530i with most options. 18" M5 look alike wheels Bought August 2008 with 34k on it.
2006 Range Rover Sport with K&N filter and Borla cat back exhaust.
Maybe a Defender soon or an old M3 to play with, although the wife has other ideas!
I think it is perfectly fine as long as you don't put on an M5 emblem. The M emblem stands for Motorsport and if you are supporting the line of M accessories, like wheels and aero kit parts , then IMHO it is acceptable. I don't think your are being a poser. If your car is bone stock, then the M emblem is taboo.
In addition to my 2004 530i, I have a Range Rover Sport HSE with all the optional cosmetics of the Supercharged model, sans supercharged engine. I elected to de badge the truck. I could have put the supercharged emblem on and no one would have known the difference. Maybe losing all the emblems on your car might be a cool way to go, too.
In the end, if it makes you happy then NO ONE but you has the right to dictate what goes on the back of your car.

Ha! That's the new badge I have on my car, except I did Shadowchrome, which is darker on the lettering, but I did the monochrome black and white bars. I also did that M badge in Carbon Fiber, but that's delayed in shipping.
Anyway, on a non-M, I think it's a bad idea. What's wrong with the 530 badge? If you're not in love, get the 530 in Carbon Fiber or Black Lettering from Bimmian! That looks sweet!

I think if you put it on the left side of the trunk, it would be okay. We all have our opinions and the only thing that matters is what you think. I say...go for it.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I will post pictures with and without the badge next week, lets see what you guys think then. As of right now I think I will stick to a clean rear end.

Just stick it on the left side of the trunk and keep the 530i .
