This sucks
I'm sorry to hear this man! Maybe you best bet is to try and find a local indie mechanic you can trust, and get a better deal on the valve seals job.

Wow... I love these cars but really cant believe the amount of serious issues they seem to have. Reading the Forum everyday turns up so many tranny issues and oil leaks... and nothing is a cheap fix! I have certainly had my fair share of issues, and while I think the majority have been fairly minor I find myself worrying about letting the mileage creep up as fast as it does... I drive 100+miles per day... and thats just to work and back!

I was lucky my oil issue was a bad switch... easy enough. My coolant issue was a pinhole in the expansion tank and a water pump in the past... again easy enough...

Good luck with this...

I feel ya OP. My car had some intake problems last month (ruptured vacuum hose). Car shakes when idle. Took the car to my mechanic and got it fixed cheaply enough. After a week I had another problem with the pcv valve and the car was blowing off white smoke. Again took my car to my mechanic and got the pcv valve replaced. Then this morning I was having the same low oil level warning as the OP. So I just got the oil changed and hopefully that is the end of that.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I just got off the phone with BMW of NA and they will not honor the warranty. Went to the supervisor etc. Apparently if I bought new cars from the dealer they might put in a good word for me but I always buy used and try to stay with my indie so SOL.

I'll see what the indie charges. I'm hoping for more like $3K

1. Carefully watch your oil consumption. 1 qt./1,000 mi or less is considered "normal". Measure the oil level in exactly the same way/location/vehicle position each time. Check the oil level every 100 miles until you establish the true consumption rate. Never let it fall below the minimum level.

2. Remember: You can buy at least 1,000 quarts of oil for what they want for that repair! If it's burning 1 qt. every 100 miles that's 100,000 miles!!!

3. If the oil consumption is confirmed and the usage is absolutely unacceptable....Get a second opinion on the diagnosis!!!

4. If the first opinion is confirmed, then definitely get a second quote!!! Most dealers will negotiate their labor rate. Ask for the warranty rate on their labor (what they would get from BMW for warranty work), and have an independent shop quote.
