Past couple of days, I notice the engine is a bit loud, especially at start up. It lessens after warm up but the sound is very detectable. It sounds like those old Mercedes that use diesel.

I search and don't see much on this topic. Has anyone experienced this with their V-8?

Thanks guys

Richard

I've come to conclusion (after 30 yrs) with the new BMW's is you have to live with the persistent idiosyncrasies with these cars or they will BMW (Break My Wallet)! If you want to experience the BMW culture, buy a E28 M5, restore it and live the life. Otherwise take it to the dealer and bend over!!!!

One way to diagnose engine (or related) noises is by removing the belt and turn each of the pullies (alternator, PS pump, idler, tensioner, AC compressor) by hand while listening for any noises and wobble. If all pullies are in good shape, and the belt is in good shape, then the noise may be coming from inside the engine. While the belt is off, run the engine for few seconds and listen for that noise. If the noise disappears, then the noise is actually coming from one of the external pullies/accessories/belt. When you run the engine with the belt off, you will get error message about the charging system/alternator. Ignore that... running the engine without the belt for a minute or two won't damage anything.

There is no easy way to diagnose engine noises - especially over the internet. I suggest you get a mechanic's stethoscope and probe around to narrow down the root cause of the noise.

Just upload a video clip of the engine sound...

please give me your opinion of what may be the cause before I schedule an appointment to bring it in. It was much more quieter a month ago.

Thanks
