Just heard back from the BMW dealer and they said it was down to a loose grommet which was not sealing the sound insulation in the cabin. I can't see how a grommet prevent so much sound coming into the cabin but does it seem plausible to anyone?
can you find where this grommet is exactly?

Take it for another drive and screw them down on the price ... I'd still have a smash repairer look it over too.

Took the car for another drive and the car sounds like it should so it seems fixed. The grommet was under the steering wheel, when I challenged him, he even showed me the technicians email to him which confirmed what he said. Anyway, the car seems as you'd expect for 7k mileage and 7 months old but still going to try to haggle as much as I can. Will also get an independent vehicle check done too.

Thanks for all the advice.

I had the exact same problem with a dislodged grommet on a car a few years back. Surprising how much noise gets into the cabin from such a small thing.

I hope its fixed, because it obviously caused you some concern and there is nothing worse than spending a lot of money for a car you are not totally happy with. You will constantly obsess over the noise and it will drive you nuts. I am sure there are plenty of other cars out there, but if you are happy with the repair then good luck and happy motoring

This was my thoughts exactly, it was very weird how a grommet could cause so much noise in the cabin. The noise outside didn't seem any louder so it did point to sound insulation. Anyway, good to know that someone else has experienced the same problem which puts my mind at ease. I will be getting a full vehicle check anyway though just to make sure.
