I had my 525d stolen together with my MB CLK 230. While I was asleep upstairs, the house was broken into, the keys taken and the cars driven away. The only other things taken were my wallet and mobile phones, so I guess the cars were the target. This happened a month ago and there is no sign of the 525. The CLK was found 2 weeks ago with some minor damage - about ?3,000 bodywork / paint. The insurance company only authorised the repairs today. The same insurance company have not yet made an offer for the 525 - they are awaiting the investigator's report - 2 weeks after the interview.

The 525 had quite a few extras, taking the value close to ?40k. The car was only 8 months old and had less than 5,000 miles. Anyone out there had experience with British insurance companies? What are they likely to offer? I have top up insurance, but this states that primary insurers should be responsible for the value of extras. Am I likely to lose out big time?

DEpending on the offer, should I go for another 5 series, or should I be thinking about the 3?

Maybe it could be interesting that you post the VIN n? to make life of the burglars less easy. If the car has not yet been cut into pieces to be sold as spares in Eastern countries

Jeffrey, I feel very sorry for your indeed; yet please remember that you - and your family - are unharmed as we all know all the stories about riffles put to our head while asleep.

good luck and buy yourself a new Bimmer

Wow - that's quite a few extras to hit ?40k! I thought I went a bit mad with the extras!!!

However, I thought most insurance policies covered full replacement if the car is less that 12 months old? (Total new for new) But I suspose it depends on what you told the insurer when you insured it - you should reveal all to allow them to quantify the risk to them... If you have a ?4k stereo system they should know I tell them all the bits that are there - most of the extras don't affect the premium. (They're more worried about large wheels, power increases and body-kits)

Sorry to hear that. I recently read an article in the newspaper, and it seems that this is the main strategy when stealing a "steal proof" car - get the keys and drive away. I even read about car hijacking & robbing.

My "counterstrike" to this is to always keep the keys in my pocket or very close to me. The keys are in the bedroom at night, and the damn criminal wouldn't get that far because of the dogs!

After all, I'm glad nobody in your family were hurt!

Damn, such bad news.
Sorry to hear of this but know that you lived to tell about it. That's the best part.

You will get to drive a bimmer again.

Guys who do this are scum and will get what's coming to them. Of all the bugs the e60 has, I hope your car gets a new one... a failure in the locking mechanism and locks them inside!
