Don't buy an 04 545i with an earlier date. Just warning from someone with experience.
I would disagree, Mine is one of the first and with the exception of the run flat tires it has been rock solid.

Whats all this negativity with SMG? The transmission is fine. Works well and is a lot of fun.

BMW discontinued it because salesman were not trained on how to sell the car so there is not enough demand for it.

Ask anyone on the board that has owned it for a good amount of time... I've only heard good things. There has only been a hand full of people who have had probmes with it and it was the hydraluic pumps... other than that no other problems. Look at Steptronic and all the "Transmission Bang" problems...

Hope I did not diss the SMG too much. Just relaying that a DSG type tranny is regarded as the best solution for speed and driveability. SMG is better than DSG for spirited driving though.

Maybe people preferred manuals, as opposed to the unique nature of SMG. I rarely saw a SMG ordered for the lot.

The Steps are nice and fast, and the sports Step will be even better. The slam stuff is again found more in the 04s.

No. I'm just saying that there's still too much un accurate information floating around about SMG. Sure you can say I defend it because I have one but because I have one, I know what it really is about. No doubt a steptronic is a good transmission and manual is a proven design... but capping down on SMG and saying not to get it and that it'll break for sure out of warranty and will cost 3 arms and a leg to repair I dont buy.

DSG and Steptronic is better only for the general public that dont bother to learn how to drive SMG properly... "smoother" I can tell you me and a lot of other SMG drivers out there can drive a SMG smoother than a automatic can shift. Just like manual its a skill. You dont jump in and mash the pedal and expect french butter.

Hey but if Steptronic is your cup of tea then great. I like to flick / row my own gears. More people need to give SMG a try and its a pity that dealers are sooooooo poorly informed about SMG.

As for repairs... let me see... DSG or rather... BMWs upcomming ZSG with dual clutch... think repair cost would be cheaper for dual clutch, more technology and probably just as much ICs controlling the clutch(S)?

And for daily driveability... SMG to me is simple to drive in traffic. Theres no issue. A auto in traffic is harder for me. I hate how it keeps lunging forward even with my foot off the gas causing me to have to move my feet more often to the brake just to keep me from not kissing the bumper of the car in front when trying to keep up with rolling traffic.

Hahahaha the IS 350 would have kept up or BEAT ya if it was running half a tank of 100 octane too... Oh and not to mention I couldnt get down to 2nd gear in 60 mph with a auto... with SMG you can downshift to 2nd at 60mph.

There you go another bonus for SMG... much much more control.
