For me, at least one consideration in addition to performance is resale value. From what I read during my research neither MB nor Audi holds its value as well as BMW.
That's interesting, because in the UK, Mercedes hold their value best, BMW 2nd and Audi is a very poor 3rd.

Have you considered an Audi S5?
I know its a coupe but it seems like a great value with fantastic performance and is more unique than an 5-series, E-class or A6.

Empirical data regarding the resale value for the entire brands in the US may indeed support the UK rankings you site.
