For me, at least one consideration in addition to performance is resale value. From what I read during my research neither MB nor Audi holds its value as well as BMW.

That's interesting, because in the UK, Mercedes hold their value best, BMW 2nd and Audi is a very poor 3rd.

Have you considered an Audi S5?

I know its a coupe but it seems like a great value with fantastic performance and is more unique than an 5-series, E-class or A6.
lowOrbit: did u drive one? The new S5 looks very nice; I had written a post for any feedback on the S5 in the 'competition' heading awhile back.

Really? I wouldn't have ranked them in that order. Can you post a link to your source of this info?

I suppose I should have qualified my comments by stating that my research was done several years ago. I was comparing only the BMW e46 325, MB 230 Kompressor, and the Audi A4. I mostly looked at Edmunds.com and Autotrader.com as I recall. After weighing the performance characteristics, styling, features, resale value, personal needs at the time, etc., I chose the 325.

Empirical data regarding the resale value for the entire brands in the US may indeed support the UK rankings you site.

2 sources.

Pretty much any car magazine will tell you that Audi's lose a greater proportion of their values than MB or BMW. They will also claim that BMW's and MB's retain similar values, but this isn't true (see 2nd point below)

Secondly, every time I change my car (around every 2 years), I extensively research the used car market when deciding whether to 'opt out' of the company car scheme. Audi's back up the car mags stats having lost most value from new (being slightly less prestigious than the other 2 marques) but MB's that started life as the same price as a BMW can be 5-10% more costly used. This isn't always apparent at main dealers but if you study the wider market then this is fairly consistent.

Even though I'm a BMW convert and have only run 1 Mercedes that I didn't get on with, I'd have to concede that MB is the slightly more prestigious brand, which probably explains the better retained values.

Previous comments notwithstanding, here's one car publication reference, albeit two + years old and US, that indicates BMW as the number one brand and the 5-series in particular in the Top Ten. No MB is even on the list.

http://www.caranddriver.com/dailyautoinsid...-blue-book.html

Of course, this will vary by year, region, publication, etc. Bottomline: Of the marques mentioned in the original post, the BMW will hold its value as well as or better than either.

I was of course referring to retained values here in the UK as I have no knowledge whatsoever of the US used car market and should have qualified my comments as such.
