Doug 999,

Are you using special settings on your Logic 7? I experimented for a half an hour and found I couldn't top the factory presets.

G'o
I just checked and here's what I have
100 +3
200 even
500 -2
1K even
2K 2+
5K 4 from the top
10K 2 from the top
Treble 3+
Base even
L7 off

Try that out - a little boomy at low volume but nice turned up a bit.

Thanks Doug,

This may sound completely moronic, but where in the menu is the "L7" control? And what does it do?

Hmm, I do have trouble believing the Logic 7 could sound as lousy as I've heard so far. I've been listening primarily to my iPod...I wonder if the problem might be the (new for '07) auxiliary jack.

Ditch the ipod for a start, i hate the ipod, sounds harsh and flat, no warmth to it at all.

A good test to show how bad the ipod is it to burn a cd with the same 320kbps album as you have on your ipod and listen to both, amazing the difference.

My Lexus RX 300 standard sound system was audiophile-grade by comparison.

There is no such thing as an OEM "audiophile grade" stereo system. That is an oxymoron.

The Logic 7 is good for OEM, but that does not mean it is good by any real standards.

I had a 1999 Lexus RX-300 before I got my E60. I purchased it with every option except the nakamichi. I then drove the car from the dealer to the car stereo shop, where it remained for 6 months getting my competition car stereo installed... to the tune of about $20,000 after it was all said and done.

THAT is audiophile-grade.

An even better display of the poor sound quality of the iPod is to rip a CD to WAV (no compression), and load that WAV onto your iPod and then play it in the car and compare to the original CD. Unbelievable the difference in bass response.... even after I removed the caps/resistors from the AUX input wire.

Interesting topic, as I also have a 1999 RX300 with the standard Pioneer.

I still think the best stock car stereo I have owned is the one in the RX300. I just play it flat. The subwoofer is quite effective for my music (deepest bass is from Phil Lesh). If you like current generation music (e.g. lots of low thumping bass) you probably would not like the system as much.

I have the stock U.S. stereo in my 5 series, not the L7. I think the imaging is fine, but I wish I had a tad more low bass.

I have 2 cars currently. A 2005 545i with Logic 7, and a 2006 325i with Logic 7.

The Logic 7 in the 325i actually sounds better to me. I have removed the caps/resistors from the AUX input on the 545i... but the 325i has the OEM installed AUX, which I have not altered. The difference is subtle, but I can still notice it. I prefer the sound in the 325i.

(deepest bass is from Phil Lesh).

Bass response actually depends more on the recording itself than most people realize. A lot can be done in mastering.

I used to love listening to Dave Mathews Band because the mastering on their CDs has always been top-notch. Basslines are so clear and defined. Good quality mastering can make any stereo sound better.

In fact, a 320kbps MP3 in the cd drive still sonds better than the wav being played through the ipod, I think that says a lot.
