You may have experienced "vapor lock" which can happen in certain weather conditions when fuel is very low. I've not experienced it in a 5er, but I did in another car many years ago.

I too wll accept Jonathan's ire as I have experieced the adrenilan rush of seeing "---" on my miles to empty screen. Wasn't that a Seinfeld episode??!!
