I left my key in the switch for about 30mins and drained the battery almost complete, later found out from the dealer that was not a good idea...

Has anyone ever seen anything official from BMW about leaving the key in the ignition? I always leave it in the ignition when parked in the garage, sometimes for several days, without incident.

I disagree. I don't think that's how it's supposed to be but for some reason, many people believe this to be true. When I had my (non-CA) 2004 car, I always left the key in the ignition while parked in my garage and I never had issues with a low battery and the car always went to sleep properly. It seems as if there's something else wrong with the OP's car since it's still happening to him with the key out of the ignition.
I'll bet there are plenty of people who leave their keys in the ignition while in their garage yet this issue doesn't come up very often so again, I don't think BMW designed the car to act this way...

I may have been mistaken, but I always though that leaving the key in the car will make the car "think" that you're about to start the engine and it will continually run the car's computers. But I may be completely off on this - can't deny that. Especially, since OP says the voltage didn't change, but the message still came up.
