I left my key in the switch for about 30mins and drained the battery almost complete, later found out from the dealer that was not a good idea...

Has anyone ever seen anything official from BMW about leaving the key in the ignition? I always leave it in the ignition when parked in the garage, sometimes for several days, without incident.

When I had my (non-CA) 2004 car, I always left the key in the ignition while parked in my garage and I never had issues with a low battery and the car always went to sleep properly. I may have been mistaken, but I always though that leaving the key in the car will make the car "think" that you're about to start the engine and it will continually run the car's computers. But I may be completely off on this - can't deny that. Especially, since OP says the voltage didn't change, but the message still came up.
