DD 545i, have you been aware of this "trick" for the last 23 years?

Nope, these are not the pathway lights noted in the manual, they're the "roadside parking lamps" noted in the manual...

the corresponding brake lights also come on don't they?
No brake lights come on, just parking lights from one side only...basically, the the average dude, it looks like one side is burned out.

Also, for many years, M-B cars used to have the light switch arranged in a way that caused many valet parking guys to park the car with one side illuminated. If the switch was at the 12 o'clock position, everything was off. If you moved it clockwise one click, you got full parking lights, if you moved it clockwise two clicks, you got headlights. That's what most people would do during normal driving, etc. If you moved the switch counter-clockwise one click, you would get one side's parking lights and if you moved it two clicks counter-clockwise, you'd get the other side's parking lights. Most valets that weren't familiar with M-B cars would take a car with the headlights on (fully clockwise) and move the switch fully counter-clockwise (past the twelve o'clock off position) and walk away thinking they turned things off...

I'm surprised people aren't more familiar with this and I'm also surprised no one has commented on people saying "Your lights are on," to which the reply is, "I'm parked and the parking lights are on."

That's quite true Jonathan but then again, it doesn't surprise me a bit that the US owners aren't familiar with this feature -- if anything, the first thing a typical US driver would say if he saw a car parked with these parking/standing lights on isn't "Your lights are on", they'd likely say "Hey, your parking lights are burned out on one side!"

I've known about this since my first Bimmer in '97, but I have never been able to figure out why I need it. I mean, Ok, so I'm parallel parked adjacent to the sidewalk and there are cars in front and back of me. Why do I want to stand out with my "parking lights" on, and how long can I have them on before I need to call AAA for a jump?
