It does not come from plastic cows. It actual comes from the Nauga - thus the name Naugahyde, which is the same as leatherette. They use the "ette" suffix becasue the Nauga is such a small animal. Many hides needed to make one seat.

a friend of mine got beige leatherette in his 3 series and hated it after awhile cause it cracked and you saw the wear marks. luckily the dealership fixed it. if it was me, i'd take the leather

For me I can tell if its real leather or leatherette. I dont like that hard plastic feel and palstic smell. I'll take real leather over leatherette anytime and all the time. I'll spend the extra time and effort to keep it looking clean and nice. Condition it every 6 months... clean it with leather cleaner... all that good stuff.

I drove an loaner e61 with leatherette. It is difficult to tell the difference just by appearance. The problem I found with it is that it is much hotter. It does not breath like leather, so you tend to sweat on it when it is warm.
