So don?t take this discussion to serious - it?s only a discussion and we ALL love BMW - doesn?t matter if it is with leather or no - black or white
I have still some time to figure out my decision before it is time to change the car.

I don?t understand people who buy a 50.000 - 70.000 Euro BMW and want to save 2.000 Euro on the seats. It is an option what you use every minute you spend in the car. I could imagine to save money on the colour or the wheels, but on the seats? No way - a BMW 5-series without leather is a NO GO.
It is an other thing when you buy an used one - so you can not control this.

...I have bought 4 used BMW's but have never bought a used BMW without leather - I simply move on to the next ad for a car with leather. Often when trolling ads, it is also an indication of the level of equipment the car has. If it has leather, it usually has quite a few optional extras.

Maybe not all of us want to spend so much money on the car. Yeah, then we can of course buy something else than BMW. In my current car (not a BMW) I have leather seats but I really don't see so much benefit on those. Sure, they look premium but not that much.
In Finland the default seats are fabric, then you have following options:
- Fabric/Leather 1.080 Euro
- Leatherette 180 Euro
- Leather Dakota 2.740 Euro
- Leather Nappa 4.130 Euro
- Leather Nasca 2.740 Euro
- Leather Merino 14.740 Euro
So which one to choose. If BMW 5-Series without leather is a NO GO then I guess everyone takes the Leather Merino.
To me it is more a preference question, the standard fabric feels actually quite high quality to me and I could then spend 2.000 Euro to some other options. Maybe take driver's seat with memory option because the car will be driven by two drivers (180cm and 164cm tall drivers).
Just thinking ... I am about to jump into the BMW world for the first time in my life. The interesting question is that the leatherette is actually very cheap, some people state that it is still quite high quality and up to the BMW standards and some people hate it. Why would BMW have it as an option if it is a bad choice?

Why would BMW sell it if it's a bad choice? Here's a counter question for you. Why do some manufacturers make crappy, rattle trap, econo-boxes? The price gets customers in the door and sales out the door. As expensive as these cars are, there are still el-cheapos out there that don't mind tarnishing the brand image just to save a buck or two. (Why buy a BMW in the first place?) Does Mercedes or Audi offer vinyl seats (in the States?) NO! (Not to my knowledge, anyway.)

Actually, if cloth seats were available here (w/ the 20-way seats), I would've seriously considered them. Why? Because it'd be better than Leatherette, and it'd be something different than what every other Bimmer owner has. Leatherette is just nasty, dude. It does NOT "wear" better than leather. I can spot Leatherette from a mile (1.8 KM ) away. It's just plain ugly, IMO, after just a few months. Those excessively deep crevices in the texture just collect filth like nobody's business. It looks exactly like what it is, thick vinyl, in no time; whereas leather still looks classy for years down the road.

I think you assume everyone who buys leatherette tries to pass it on as leather and that's from what I'm getting out of your post. ...

I'm not saying anybody is trying to pass Leatherette off as leather. It's just near offensive that people actually say Leatherette is "just as nice as" leather. It's not even close. And the argument that Leatherette is easier to take care of holds no water. If anything, leather is easier to take care of. It doesn't have all those deep crevices to collect filth and get discolored over time like Leatherette, requiring some harsh cleaner to restore the look.

... My leather in the X5 will never work that great in the same situation. ... Now if you were me, and you had to put your dog in either of the BMW, wouldn't you choose to get leatherette just to put that dog in and not mess around with the $2000 you just put on the premium package if you were me? ...
