My Ride: 2007 530i SMG Jet Black/Beige Sport/Prem/Cold, comfort, split, shades.
Default

I purchased 17" style 122 wheels from a member on eBay before my car arrived from VPC last month. I am planning to mount snows for the winter months. Before I bid, I asked my SA about the TPM monitoring and how that works. He indicated that the system measures changes in circumference/tire speed on the wheel due to low pressure and then generates the TPM alarm. The newer 5er builds however, now have sending units mounted in valve stem to individual monitor pressure thus giving you the info on the tire position when low. i.e. same as the 750i.
My dilemma is that I have the new wheels that I may have to buy sending units.
Has anyone replaced the wheels without the sending units and been able to disable the TPM system to eliminate the alarm?
TIA for your help.

Yes, get the monitors.

I just ordered a set of OEM Style 166 wheels for my new 550i from the BMW dealership and they suggested I get the monitors and the corresponding valves.

They said builds starting 3/06 have these units. A small price to pay for keeping things working as they should.

Thanks, I will get the monitors if they fit the wheels. I am assuming that if they are BMW wheels the monitors will fit...checking with my SA.

Question?

If I plan to replace my RFTs in the future with regular tires, do I have to purchase a sending unit so that the indicators in the vehicle will work?

Without RFT, when there's a leak I think you will find it out visually without the system telling you which one tire is leaking right?

I thought the system will tell you which tire is leaking or low tire pressure (2007 vehicles only) even though you do not have RFTs. I believe the 2006 or older vehicle only give you the warning and not the particular tire.

Anyone, correct me if I am wrong. I just want to know if the system will still work without RFTs, which I plan to replace when the RFT are worned out.
