Rudy, what do you think about the TOYO Proxies compary to Contis?

I now have 12K on my LR Conti (RR is new). I measure 5/32" on the outer groove. If 10/32" is new (per calpalmer) I have 50%. There has been no spirited driving. I cannot recall when my tires' surface speed did not match that of the road. Well maybe once in a while in the rain.

Rudy, why did you stay with Conti?

Primarily because the whole thing caught me by surprise. My car was in for a state inspection (and a few other things) as the current inspection was expiring at the end of July. The SA called me to keep me updated on the car's progress while I was out of town and told me the rear tires were not going to pass the inspection. I was stunned when I learned about this but since I didn't have too many days left to start shopping around for alternatives before my inspection expired, the fronts were still quite good, and I was out of town, I decided to just allow the dealer to throw two Continentals on so that everything would match and the car would be legal.

Also, although I'm not sure anything will come from this, if I decide to persue this premature tire wear issue with BMW, I imagine it'll help my case that the dealer replaced them with the same tire and not some independent tire shop, etc...

Im at 13.5k miles in the UK on a 535d, I haven't done any burnouts but I'm quite a fan of the acceleration. I noticed just last week when cleaning the car that the rears were showing more wear than the front, but I would guestimate they are going to see me through to about 20k miles at the current rate.

Quite surprised at the difference between the front and rear wear rates to be honest. Of my other cars, the Escort is front wheel drive and has no guts, but generally wears the fronts out long before the rears (no surprise there) and the Evo (4WD) eats the rears before the fronts which I was also surprised at, but then I like to accelerate hard in that too!

That said, on the Evo I had a set of Toyo R888 semi slicks once and they lasted about 6000 miles and the Evo driving was always pretty nutty....

Only thing I can think of is that I spend a fair amount of time on the motorways so probably the place where the least amount of wear will occur???

And you bought this line?
Sorry, Rudy, but if this story had come from anyone else but you - we would laughing ourselves silly about such a rube.
Seriously, I have nearly 15,000 miles on my 550's Bridgestones and they still have another 5k left, but I'm going to replace them before next season.

Sounds like you bought a used 550 Rudy. And this whole time you thought it was brand new. Bummer.

Sorry cal, nobody, these days, accuses me of expressing myself clearly!.

In other words, matching the tire surface speed with the road speed is never spinning the drive wheels as in ?peeling rubber?, or dragging a wheel as in a panic stop or sliding as in cutting a donut. All of which accelerates tire wear.

I'm at 13K and it looks like I can easily make it to winter. I will likely change them before the weather gets too cold.

I "bought the line" because I fully trust my SA, my service tech, and the dealership. They've done nothing but bend over backwards for me (and others) for years now. They don't operate the way that you imply -- if you automatically assume that they're feeding me BS, then I can only assume that you don't have the same level of trust in your dealership. My dealership is clearly a diamond in the rough and they don't just raise the bar in customer service, they set it high and continue to hold it well above the others in the city.

(I will add one more small detail -- I do remember hearing my rear tires squealing a bit more under acceleration in recent weeks. Clearly, they were wearing down, I just never go around to actually looking at or measuring the tread. Heck, I'm lucky I found enough time to even get the car in for the inspection before it expired at the end of July...)

Back on topic, I'm not really interested in how well someone's Bridgestones are performing, etc. I'm trying to get an idea of how well the exact factory package I have is performing on other 2008 (LCI) 550s with the 19" sport package Continentals. Clearly, all of this may be just my heavy foot but just like the noisy Dunlop issue (that I coincidentally was one of the first to complain about back in 2004), if a pattern exists here there may be something we can do to get some help from BMW...

No, I understood your meaning clearly the first time.

I was trying to ask with the Emoticon, "Why?" have the tires never been pushed. It's Bimmer for pete's sake!

Cal
