My Ride: 520d LCI when it arrives..
Thumbs up

I noticed in the latest BMW magazine that it states that all 4 cylinder manual engines now come with Auto Start Stop feature. The feature that stops the engine when waiting at lights and automatically starts it again as soon as you depress the clutch. Can any new owner of a LCI 520d manual confirm this as I have not seen it mentioned in any other 5 series literature.

Thanks..

Remember that the LCI 520d engine is being superseded in September.

The new engine is the one used in the recently released LCI 120d... 177hp and 350NM. The 525d (3litre) has the 400Nm.

On the subject of 400Nm 2.0d engines... in this months german car press they are showing pictures & write-ups about the bi-turbo 2.0d engine, which is expected to have around 200hp and 400Nm. It uses a similar approach as the 535d bi-turbo engine. No mention of when it will be in the 5er though...

To the best of my knowledge, auto start-stop will only be available with auto transmission.

Sounds good, but maybe not destined for the 5 given the spec of the 525d?

Ahh. I don't feel so bad about just having ordered an e61 520d now. 400Nm would have been something.

With the 2.0d bi-turbo, they only mentioned the 1er and a possible 123d. It may not fit well with the 525d, however with the environmental & cost pressures, maybe similar power / performance from a more efficient engine will be the future. If they can also bridge the gap between the 4cyl and 6cyl engine sound , then they'd really be on to something!

Coming back to the original post - sorry for the hijacking! - I don't think I'd want to have my diesel engine starting and stopping the whole time. I'd end up feeling like James Bond's martini... shaken not stirred. Do they already have this feature in other 5er engines?

Have a look at the text in this extract from the latest BMW magazine. Definately states 4 cylinder manuals. Guess I'll fine out when I take delivery of the thing.

I see the point about the Martini moment though!! Just wont put the car in neutral.
