It is NavTeq's and car dealer's way of obtaining additional revenue. NavTeq uses some of this revenue to update the millions of POIs and navigation details on the DVD. BMW and other car dealers use their portion of the revenue to pad their bottom line.

I just got my version 2006-2 at my dealer. I was curious if they had updated an incorrect instruction for getting onto a major freeway near me. The interchange was revised in a huge project several years ago in which, among other things, the route onto the freeway was altered from being a left-hand turn on a green arrow to a right-hand turn. I have had four cars since 2004 that all used NavTeq data for their Nav Systems. All of them have not included this change in freeway access. On the way home from the dealer I tried the freeway entry instructions and they still do not have it correct. Makes me wonder what else they have not corrected for my $199 + tax. Next I will try POIs. I looked for a restaurant in the next city a month ago or so and was directed to a spot where ther was a large sign in front of what used to be this retaurtant saying the building was available for lease. When I was at another location of the same restaurant chain, I asked about the first location and was told it had been closed for over a year.

As good as navigation systems are, they cannot really keep current with all the changes that occur in POIs and roadways across all of the USA. One could probably use the original disc for four or more years with minimal misdirection. Inasmuch as no list of updated data is included, you have no way to know what is different from one DVD version to the next.

I still don't understand why one that already has the original nav dvd, has to pay the whole sum of money again for the updated version. It's not like your getting a whole smth else, only minor updates. Right? It should be free, if one can attest that it has the original dvd, and a receipt or smth. Or not free but way less the integral price.
How do I find out what version do I have?

I just submitted a corrective feedback message to NavTeq.

This is from their response following a submission of an error or correction on their website:
NAVTEQ makes navigation data available up to four times each year to a wide range of manufacturers including yours. It is important to note, however, that there is a lapse of 3-6 months between the time NAVTEQ data is made available to manufacturers and the time that this data is introduced in the marketplace. Indeed, if your suggestion requires an actual change be made to the database, please be aware that the product containing that change will not be available until a future release. Updated products are for sale according to the product plans of your system manufacturer or developer. We make every effort to ensure that our map data is fresh, accurate, and up-to-date by employing full-time staff in more than 50 offices throughout Europe and 50 offices in North America. However, we also appreciate conscientious drivers such as yourself who take the time to tell us that we might need to make a change.

You are welcome to send us additional suggestions in the future, using the Driver Feedback web site at http://update.navteq.com . Please fill out and submit the on-line form the next time you encounter a disparity between the real world road network and your product's representation of it. We will gladly investigate your requests accordingly.

Good for you

Despite their disclaimer, it can only help us or those that follow us down the road, otherwise it just won't get updated at all.

I for one m going to stick to my 2005-2 version for a veeeery long time. Unless msth new comes around, smth that would reallly revolutionise the sat-nav. In other word i'm not going to pay again 300euros for squat.

Yeah obviusly...but it's a bad treatment to all the nav owners. It's not fair. And then they expect to come clean and not use any sort of piracy when updates versions appear.

I submitted a correction to Navteq for an obvious screw-up they had where 2 highways forked and the designation for the road was obviously incorrect.

They told me that they would investigate it and later explained that they found no errors, therefore my observation was incorrect and their data was perfect. (obviuosly wrong!).

So I have not bothered to send them any more info on wrong data. It isn't very rewarding to be given that kind of response when it is clear that they have a mistake. Oh, well.

I've noticed other ones since then, but it isn't worth the time to send in these corrections. You might as well re-train your mind to accept the mistakes.
