Lane Departure Warning System - 5AD
I saw this option today. Unfortunally, I was unable to drive the car with it because it was not PDI'ed. However, the camera is located next to the rain sensor behind the class. There is a dedicated button on the steering wheel for turning the system on and off. This button removed one of the two programable memory buttons that is on the steering wheel, I believe the star key was removed but the diamond shaped key remained. The symbol on the instrument cluster lights up in yellow and shows two yellow lines. Note, I do not know if the symbol changes color if you move out of your lane.
The system basically functions if you move out of your lane without using your signal. The action to let you know is that the steering wheel vibrates. The magic number to make the system active is 45 MPH. However, the system does know if you are uneven road such as paying or such. Hope this is helpful to everyone! Enjoy!!

My Ride: My 1st was an '06 530xi, Titanium Silver w/ gray dakota leather, sport pkg. & Nav.
Now my 2nd is an '08 650i CP, Space Gray, Blk Dakota, Sprt. Auto, HUD, Sprt. Pkg., Prem. Sound, High Beam Ast. & Comfort Access
Good simple information on this option. I do not think I will get it in my next car. For those that feel this option is necessary, I hope they are not driving anywhere near me! Also, how many drivers will think it is ok to get behind the wheel when they are tired or drinking because this option will warn them?
Thanks for the information.

In the UK this is now standard on the bigger engine models like 535D etc. You might find it comes as standard on the 550i in the us

Add this option to the list of "another pointless option" I fell for one when I bought the car and the option was still brand new "High Beam Assist", although I paid only ?95 for it I should have saved that money and bought the space saver instead. In and around London that option never triggers!
