2006, have only owned it for 3 months (CPO). The repair history was pretty clean with a couple minor issues.
Only issues so far is transmission that is sluggish out of 1st gear when cold.

I had a few issues with a CPO 525i after it was bought with 46k on the clock.
1. Engine vibration at idle. This was taken care of by a service bulletin posted on another forum for which an exhaust dampener was replaced.
2. Starter dragging . They put in a new starter motor
3. Transmission fluid leak. New seal and sleeve.
I think the BMW E60 is a wonderful car to drive compared to the other cars in this segment but it comes with a catch and that is the price of admission is much higher.
After the CPO warranty has expired I will be keeping it another 10k and then selling it off. I wish BMW made a car that was more bare bones without all of the electronics.

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
Who would have figured that my 5 series being a visibly bigger car is only 100lbs more in weight. It was an ugly small hot hatch with a big motor.
This is why I love my Spyder because all it comes with is an ECU and a motor.
My '07 530 has 119,000 miles. I've had one electronic component replaced (TCU?) early on. No other warranty or repair work. I am starting to hear the clicking sound in the valve assembly that has been discussed. I only seem to hear it when I've just been driving around town - not when it's been on the highway. I understand this is about an $800 repair now, and not the value head replacement that was originally recommended.
Otherwise, I had the front brake pads and battery replaced at 100,000 miles. I've had oil changes and checkups at 10,000 mile intervals. Oh, also replaced windshield at about 80,000 due to all those highway miles. Really happy I spent the money to have full 3M film protection installed, as the front end still looks good.
This has been the most problem-free car I have ever owned.
