I have the same problem. It's not a rythmic tap but more like a random rattle. Dose it on idle and only at low rpms....is really bad at around 500-700 rpms while the engine is under load and letting out the clutch. Anything over 800 rpms and it sounds great. I just recently posted a ? About this with no absolute answers. My Buddy who is a tech mechanic at the bmw dealer said it was nothing and 2 just turn up the radio. At times it can sound embarrasing......I wonder if I can just have the idle adjusted up to 800?
second, the noise you're describing sounds more like either the throwout bearing or the flywheel.

nope, mine happens at very low acceleration in the 2nd and 3rd gears,
usually notice it when i stuck in slow moving traffic and goes away once the speed goes over 40mph

I'm also experiencing this sound from my 05 545. Like yours, it's only on light acceleration. If I get on it more, it goes away. Mine is 2nd, and 3rd as well. I can't hear it in 4th, 5th, or 6th gears. I'm a little concerned about this because I'm coming up on 50K miles. I do have an aftermarket warranty, but I'm still a little nervous.
Has anyone corrected this problem? And if so, what was the fix?
