I hear that knocking noise on my E60 when I rock the steering back and forth while the car is standing still with engine off. I don't hear any noises while driving.

Some people have indicated that they replaced the lower portion of the steering shaft and that fixed the noise for them.

Hello, Yes I have the noise when I drive !

I have the noise Left side and right side( with the steering wheel) at the same position.

Ok, the lower portion of the steering shaft, but I don' find any mechanical slack

my steering wheel will knock if i move it back and forth, with the engine off.

were the lower control arms replaced recently? if the bolts that hold the control arm bushing to the frame, are not really tight, they will shift back and forth slightly, causing knocking sound. it happened to me, when i didnt tighten the bolts enough.

Yes I replaced the lower control arm on September 2014 bot nothing change.

I can try to much more tight the bolts.

Is it complicated to replace the lower portion of the steering shaft ?

Checking in - same problem here. No effect to the driveability of the car but still very annoying.
