One of the things I don't like about the E60 dash at night is the lack of lighting for the air vent controls. They are completely dark so you have to feel around which is kind of silly when you consider that the cheapest cars on the planet have them lit. My E39 did as well, so not sure why BMW removed this simple feature. Hmmm ... wondering if new 7 has them lit now ... If it does the F10 will as well ...

Come to think of it though, this is the ONLY thing I don't like about the E60's interior at night. I don't remember if the center console has an interior light either. If not, it should.
I don't have an issue with this, because UK spec cars have an abience light between the front and rear reading lights, which the whole cabin a nice orange glow, which clearly shows up the dials. I don't know whether US spec cars have this??

My car has the ambience lights as well. I was thinking the same thing when I read 06550-6M's post. It's possible that he has the interior lights dimmed enough to not make them very effective...

You could be right there Rudy. I've always thought how well the whole cabin area is lit when the interior lights are turned to maximum. As you say, it can surely be the only explanation.

P.S That post made it my 100th

So the amount of interior ambient lighting increases proportionate to the back-lighting of the instrument display? I didn't realize that and will give it a try. It will probably make the instruments and iDrive / Navigation screen too bright for my personal tastes, but I'll certainly give it a go. Nice to know that little tidbit - thanks!

But, really, why not just give us the same tasteful 'specs' of light that are on the OP's knobs and window lifts, etc.? Ah well ... The "perfect car for all" has yet to be created and I love mine nonetheless!

You can turn your idrive brightness down seperately under the display settings in...idrive. That way, you can have ambiant lighting AND a non-blinding screen

There is a small notch of illumination, on each temp knob, at night. Problem is there is no illumination, at the notch, on either in the daylight. Thus, with less than good vision, one cannot see what temp is set by looking at the temp knob- in the daylight. And, the temp does not automatically display anywhere as I adjust the temp. So for me, I must put on glasses to see what the temp is set at.
