Hey all,
I found a key fob in the glove compartment slotted into a holder, when you slide it out it's HALF THE FOB, the inner of it is missing. What the hell is this for?

For emergency. You put your wallet key in there and insert it in the ignition so u can start your car if you lost your key and happened to actaully carry the wallet key in your wallet.

Mate I am still confused on what this "wallet key" is for? If I lost my key how could I even get in and if my car was broken into, are you saying this wallet key can start the car?

The wallet key is a key to keep in your wallet for emergencies. It will open the door.
It also contains the "chip" required to start the car but the key doesn't fit the ignition.
Put the wallet key into the adapter stored in the glove box and insert that into the ignition.
A replacment wallet key is ~$70 USD and a replacment adapter is ~$15 USD

There is no chip in the wallet key I have. It opens the doors and starts the car but I do not think it works on the trunk or glove box - like a valet key. Its just a cut out with no fob... like an old school key but made of plastic or something like it.

There is a chip inside, I can almost guarantee you that. It will open everything in your car including your trunk and glove box. It is not a valet key or "like" a valet key. It is a spare MASTER key.

My 04 545 manual
Spare key for storage in a safe place,
such as in your wallet.
This key cannot be used to open the
locks for the luggage compartment lid
and glove compartment. This is an
advantage in a hotel, for example. The
key is not intended for constant use
If its not a valet key, then why does it state its perfect for hotels right in my manual???

Not sure why people always want to argue... it may have a small chip - not sure, but go to page 28

I think there are way too many years between models in this discussion. I don't think your 2004 is comparable to the OP's question and what has been described. Does the spare key for your car fit inside an adapter? Does your regular key fob have a metal key that slides out of it? The metal key that slides out of the fob is used to turn the locks on the glove box and trunk so the glove box will not open and the trunk will not open from the key fob nor button in the driver foot well.
The wallet key is the expensive part because it has the chip. It requires the cheap adapter just so it will fit in the key slot.
