I have an 08 535i with comfort access. Someone told me I needed to occasionally put my key fob in the ignition to recharge the battery in it. Is there any truth to this? The reason I ask is because I saw the dealer replace the battery and they didn't use a rechargeable one. They used the basic flat round duracell. Any info much appreciated.

There is no truth to that. If you have Comfort Access, the key fob does not recharge. You must replace the battery yourself.

They might be getting confused. The non-comfort access key fob is rechargeable but the comfort access one isn't. I guess this makes sense as the comfort access key fob isn't gonna spend much time in the ignition hole.

While a remote possibility you could have a weak or bad replacement.

The replacement is easy to do and uses, I believe, a CR2032? standard battery available almost anywhere. For those members with warranty left, they are even covered under the OEM warranty(at least mine were for both fobs).

The owners' manual in my 2006 530i mentions periodically using both keys to recharge the battery in the combination key / fob. I think newer models have a different setup.

It says that for non- comfort access fobs only. If you look under the comfort access section in your manual it will say that the battery is replaceable with a non-rechargeable CR2032.

Word of advice-do not change your 2032 battery while sitting in the drivers seat as I did earlier tonight. The cover over the battery flew off and fell, along with my dead battery between the seat and the middle console!Aaaaaarrrggghhh!
Very annoying to put it mildly!
