yeah, I'm pretty happy to be only 10mins away from a autobahn. Are you in ETAR ?
ETAR?? never heard of that. I'm in Baden-Wurttemberg, near Stuttgart.

I can't help but laugh over how intense this thread has become. Let me say this, although there are "usually" no speed limits posted on the Autobahns, the average speed is still about 70 - 80 mph. Cars in Germany go through very stringent inspections that alot of foreign imports here could not pass without modification. The quality of the roads in Europe are FAR better than in the U.S. You never see potholes, debris, or anything of the sort. It is also more difficult to get a license here compared to the states. I'm not saying people in Europe are better drivers, but the inspection laws and license requirements do reduce the risk of accidents.

Since there are no such controls in the U.S., I would never consider driving over 100mph there, even if I was the only car on the road. There is just too many dangers at that speed.

I buy my M5 to enjoy it, not to race and kill innocent bystanders or drivers.
I've lived in Tampa - the only thing you can enjoy about owning an M-5 there is the amount of chicks you can pull with that car whenever you drive it down to Channel side or Ybor City

True... definitely hit the chicks... but I dont think that's his case when he said 'enjoy'. More like going 65 MPH speed limit enjoyment

Screw it, I'll admit it...

This was 11 years ago, mind you, so bare with me here. I was in my early 20's and stupid. I was living in SF and I sped down 280 South (just past Crystal Springs Golf Course) and got up to 130mph in my old Jetta GLX (Great car b/t/w). Was it stupid? Maybe. I was following a friend in his Mustang. He was local and knew the roads. It was a Saturday afternoon and the road was wide open (not many cars). It lasted for a few hundred yards, before returning to the 80mph range.

And I must admit it guys, especially for those that live in the Bay Area, HWY 280 is a road that screams "speed". I never got that feeling on 101, but with 280, I would always see drivers speeding. It's pretty easy to get the lead foot on that road, esp when it's wide open.

(I know I'm going to get it for saying this on this thread...so just hit me with it. Come on, lay into me and tell me I'm an idiot).

Look kids, there is only one way to sort this out and stop the arguing - HAVE A RACE.

Nobody should EVER drive above 70mph anywhere in the world. That's why on this forum we all drive BMW 116i cars, restricted to 70mph. Right?

i dont think that was bs, the 550i in the top end should outperform the 335i, even with less weight; unless there is something that I am missing? V8>I6 with two small turbos?

Its just math lads. V8 has 60 or so more lbs of torque.

I'm not saying people in Europe are better drivers
People in Europe just drive better. People here drive like shit.

Okay so here is my two cents. Screw it, here's a full $20.

C, you're a phucking idiot (man, I discovered a better work to use than "freaking" and it sounds a lot closer to what I really wanted to say!)

I think most of us car enthusiasts (beyond just BMW drivers) will have our moments when we want to let our car stretch it's legs and open it up. Just hope that we're conscious of our surroundings and know our limits. Everyone will have their opinions but I just think the "passionate" responses are making this a volatile debate that's not going anywhere. I think we can get our points across better if we refrain from calling each other names.
