I think this is the real reason why BMW is moving to turbo charging with its L6's and V8's, its essentially a variable displacement engine. Run at a steady state is gets gas mileage commenstruate with its (bore x stroke x #cylinders) mechanical displacement. Only under load does the power and poorer gas mileage kick in.
