Thanks for the link CRRobert!

After closer reading I found that the 545i that was tested by Car and Driver was actually the 6speed manual tranny. They gave the following stats:

545i 6speed Manual:
0-60: 5.5 s 1/4: 14.1

From what I've read/heard the 545iSMG Automatic Mode (D1-D6) shifts as fast if not faster than the 545iA. I'm guessing if Motortrend rates the 0-60 in 5.3 and 1/4 mile at 13.8 for the automatic the SMG would have similar specs, if not faster.

545mcz: FYI
As a follow up - a website has 2004 545i @ 0-60 = 5.3
1/4 = 13.8

2004 G35 @ 0-60 = 5.9
1/4 = 14.2

2003 e500 @ 0-60 = 5.8
1/4 = 14.3
juan2mini can you post the link where you found that info?

you are correct... the SMG is essentially a clutch-less manual system... it engages the clutch for you via computer hence the perfect shift each time......faster than a human...

SMG engagement was posted somewhere before I dont remember it was said that it can allow shifts faster than a highly-skilled manual drive because it is able to shift at the exact moment that a gear needs to be engaged....

It is very frustrating that the SMG has not been tested in the 545. Even the manual has not really been written-up much.

hhaa.. well..i think the 5er has more of a luxurious, cruising type attitude that a more track-oriented attitude.... and even tuners such as ACS used step in their showcars.... deeming the market conditions do not dictate a need for even their signature short-shifter............ so.... probably cuz the car is so new..... i believe as SMG becomes more prevalent. the numbers will follow..

the ///M3 SMGs have had alot of exposure as it is the "complete" one....and 5er is a simplified version..
