Do you have the periodic table? I'm able to tell you if you show me the periodic table.. and i'm wondering why you're asking such question in this forum..

Because I believe BMW refers to the trim on the steering wheel and the steptronic shift knob (and idrive?) as "Ruthenium".

Ruthenium is a metal. But with regard to the BMW parts it is plastic with a metalic paint.
The same cud be said about BMW wood trim.I guess it is also fake.

Thank you. You are joking about the wood, aren't you? Isn't it a real veneer?

I do not think wood is fake. It is just very very thin layer on a carrier then covered with glossy paint.
Ruthenium is going to be used even for the advanced AC controls from this march production.

I can't tell it for sure. But from the look (in particular Anthracite) it shud be fake.

Ruthenium is a fairly rare and fairly cheap (~ $30/g) metal.
Its a hard, WHITE metal and can be used in alloys and catalysts.

I thought the shift knob and Idrive knob were aluminum.
I scratched the shift knob with my ring the other day, small scratch but noticeable, especially because it looks much shiner (Like if it peel a thin film over the metal)
