The arm was bent how? convex bend = (

Could you see it?
You couldn't really see it, it was just a VERY consistent chatter on the return swipe of the wiper that led me to think it was bent. Lo and behold it was and it's been smooth sailing (wiping) ever since!

Guys,

If your wiper(s) is just noisy on EITHER the upstroke OR the downstroke (not both), then there is probably an easy, simple fix that will take a few minutes to do.

Imagine your leading edge of the noisy blade. What is happening is that the edge is trying to "dig in" to the screen (an exaggeration, I know, but it is an illustration). If you twist the wiper arm (not the blade) so that the blade has a reduced angle of attack to the screen, this will (in 90% of cases) cure your problem.

Get yourself a small adjustable spanner, and some rag or card to protect the paint on the wiper arm.
If your noise is on the upstroke, look along the arm, from the wiper end to the pivot. Put the spanner on the arm and twist the arm anticlockwise - about 10 degrees at a time.
Try your wipers - you'll probably have to only do it two or three times.

Obviously, if your blade is noisy on the downstroke, then twist the arm clockwise.

What if it jumps and chatters on the up AND down strokes?

I think the the blade is being forced against the glass too hard, I was refraining from doing anything because I didn't want it to reduce its high speed capabilities.

Mine too.

Dealer replaced the blades and it still chatters. Nice. 61K for a german engineered car and the wipers chatter.

Doesn't it rain in Germany or what?

They drive them so fast there you don't need wipers...

you ROCK! that's been driving me nuts for the 8 months I've had my car! It never dawned on me to just twist the arm. I just did it with my hand, no tools required, and the noise is gone. yes!

IMO, these new "icon" wipers stink compared to the E39 ones. Those never, ever, ever chattered, jumped, or even shook.

wow great response Mike. I'm going to check it out because only my upstroke is making noise on the drivers' side only on the very edge of the blade you can see it bouncing.
what do you mean by spanner? thanks

But, if you ask a states side mechanic for a spanner you get a different tool.
