The decline in E60 sales is not a surprise. The E60 has been around since the 2004 model year and is in the last year of its cycle whereas some of its perceived competition in the marketplace (MB E Class) is a brand new model.

Not only that, but lets be honest...... a stock E60 with chrome trim and non-sport is seriously boring to look at from the outside. However, give it an M-tech kit, 19" or 20" wheels, tints, shadowline, black grill, and all the other good stuff and oh man...... looks AMAZING.

By doing this your obviously helping car companies sell cars and giving a chain of people a little more job stability - from the guy crushing your rusty old buick, to the service manager you'll see when you bring your new car in next month. And of course this is stimulating the economy in a variety of ways.
I think it's a great idea in the short run. If it will jumpstart things and get us on the right path without sending us into the same downward spiral is an unknown.

A non-sport package 550i will have none of the above-listed appearance enhancements as standard equipment. But I have seen our members with non-sport 545s and 550s, enhance them to the point where you could not tell from the outside that their ride is a non-sport.

That's my point. It's not aimed at the BMW crowd.
Personally, I HATE this cash for clunkers program. Once again, without my consent, our government is reaching into my pocket and taking my hard earned dollars and redistributing them to someone else. If I did this to someone, I would be jailed for mugging, but since it's our government, it's ok.

Where the hell is mnmike finding new cars for $12K?????? Not on Planet Earth. Not unless it has manual windows, cloth interior, three speed manual and no A/C. But maybe that's the idea, unless you are pol.

And I have to wonder about that nasty sodium solution they are running through the engines of these trade ins - that HAS to be adding to the carbon footprint!!!
