Hi guys

i have a 525d 2004 E60 which has done about 55k miles. in the bast few months after it has had a strange problem. Once ive started the car and accelerated kinda hard (maybe upto 3-4k rpm) within the first few minutes, the car runs very rough afterwards.

This rough running is the car juddering / stuttering when under light acceleration as if the engine only has half its cylinders. Also, the engine note is deeper all the time, esp when accelerating from 1st gear but it also has an 'air' noise. The car runs like this for about 30 mins and turning engine on/off doesnt help anything and will just correct its self where the acceleration, engine note and everything goes back to normal.

The car hasnt hard a proper service for about 18k miles although has add its oil changed. The car has V25 i think of software or maybe later. I think the car is still under a used car warranty, any pointers as to what the problem maybe will be greatly apreciated!

cheers,

chris

my 5.30d is doing something similar. Am going to the dealership on Tuesday, will post the outcome.

Suggest you book your car in to get it checked out.

Went to the dealer today and have booked it in.

They suspect one of 2 things, either a faulty injector or it might actually be gearbox related following my software upgrade.

I dont think gearbox due to the engine noise, mine sounds like a damn tractor until the turbo kicks in, it is also shudders when I switch off - it used to turn of so smoothly.

It goes in next week, I will let you know.

Just got it back today Chris (and logged in here to give you the update )

Unfortunately they did not fix the problem completely, but it does seem better than it was.

They told me that they reset the particle filter....I have no idea what this means

I am not 100% happy with it and have told them. They want the car back ASAP but I am travelling this week so it will be next week.

will keep you posted.

Although no BMW official statement has been made on this - at least to the best of my knowledge - it appears that some of us with Diesel and Diesel Particle Filter devices report this issue. My 520d has been in for 4 times now, and its engine reprogrammed a couple of times. The only thing they improved was gas mileage (that's a good point ); The juddering is still there at times, and to date, the only thing to blame for this is the Diesel Particle Filter which recycles from time to time - which explains why you have this issue from time to time... At least that's what the BMW specialists told me. But I would be glad to have some other hints...

Thanks for writing the response (and so quickly copello!)

i have read a few things on here talking about the car burning particles at different stages although im not too sure what that really means. sounds interesting what the dealer has done with your car, might be interesting to see if it continues to run any better and what else they come up with.

From reading a few things on here, a few people have been talking about injectors. also, my problems started quite a while back although much less noticable and it was always when the fuel tank was below a quarter full. someone was hinting that this isnt a great idea given the sediment and other rubbish that is likely to be in there.

Since then, ive decided to load a full bottle of Halfords (uk car accessories store) finest injector cleaner for diesels (about ?4 lol) and filled up with premium diesel from Shell. That was about 400 miles ago and thus far, it is running like a dream. every morning for weeks it has been terrible and so far 2 days in a row is has been perfect, even when i deliberatly accelerate hard after setting off lol

fingers crossed that maybe it was clogged injectors, but will update soon as to whether it is ok or if it has come back???
