I wouldn't touch a Tata, which is really too bad. I always wanted a Jag at some point in my life being of British background but I think Jag is doomed in the US. No one is going to pay serious money for car from India.

My wife wanted a Jag for years and as soon as I told her about the sale to an Indian company that was the end of that. Everyone I know has horror stories from work or home dealing with some companies "help line" based in India. They never could fix my computer now I'm going to spend huge dollars on a car.

Jags already horrible resale is only going to get worse. The brand is done in the US

Man... countless luxury and supercar manufacturers have been held by large conglomerates, etc... The Italian ones have a particularly speckled history. BMW is unique in its focus and autonomy, but to hold other companies to a similar standard is silly.

Tata Group is one of the largest holding companies in the world, reaching into nearly every industry. A buddy of mine works for their telecom (VSNL) I doubt the change of ownership will have a detrimental effect on the end product.

Aston Martin was owned by Ford and none of us would chase one of those out of our garages...

Absolutely. I'd love an Aston. Probably my favorite cars. I thought for a minute about the Vantage when I got my current car but I just couldn't afford the extra $$$

To be honest I hope you are right, I have always liked Jags and if Tata is willing to poor in millions just like Ford did anything is possible. Ford lost money every year it owned Jag and the technology of cars is moving so fast. I usually don't put much thought into Brands like a marketing guy but I think brand identity is huge in luxury cars.

Consumer Reports 2008 Annual Auto Issue was just published (it is dated April 2008). Jaguar is actually two places above BMW on Consumer Reports' predicted reliability list by manufacturer. Ford also scored above BMW. As did Hyundai. Consumer Reports also has the 6 cylinder AWD E60 amongst its list of least reliable cars in the Upscale/Luxury cars category.
My 328 convertible was decent, few problems.
My 2006 550i was virtually problem free as is my 2008 so far.

Couldn't disagree with you more.
I think Ford did tons of damage to the brand. They started mass producing body parts and Aston DBs started looking like Jags and vise versa.
I wont disagree that on a dollar scale they may have save Aston, but I think they did a world of damage to the previously hand made brand's image.
